I did a lot of research on memory foam before making my first purchase. I went from store to store, checked out listings on okay and did a lot of research on the internet as I wanted to get the most from my investment.
I didn't know if I wanted a full mattress or a topper and I found there was loads of memory foam terminology that I had never heard of. Things like; Tempurpedic, Sensus, Nasa, visco, ILD density (I didn't know if they were referring to me or the mattress at this point!). I was confused!
I purchased a traditional mattress a few years ago and was not ready to throw it out so I decided on a topper. I identified that a topper is a good investment when your mattress still has some longevity or you're not ready financially to make the leap to a full memory foam mattress. A topper is also a good way to get used to memory foam before gemitting to a mattress. I'm very happy with my topper and I'm already looking forward to buying my first memory foam mattress.
Memory foam sells under many different brand names NASA Foam, Tempurpedic, Sensus, Sealy, the list goes on. Prices vary substantially as well. Just because it is expensive, does not mean that it is the best. You need to ask the right questions.
Questions, Answers, Advice:
First a bit of history - Memory foam was originally developed by NASA to ease the pressure of extreme G-force during space shuttle take off. It was never used in the space program, but was used in medical applications (e.g., for patients suffering from pressure sores or bed-bound for a long period). Memory foam was initially too expensive for general use, but in recent years it has begee cheaper to produce and is now widely available. Its most gemon domestic applications are mattresses, pillows and mattress toppers (also known as mattress pads).
Why Memory Foam?
While it is more expensive than a traditional mattress, it is a great investment that does not deteriorate the same way over time. Also, you do not need to flip a memory foam mattress as it always bounces back to its original shape. This is a big plus since a king-sized mattress is very heavy and awkward to flip.
A memory foam mattress is usually denser than an ordinary foam mattress. This makes it more supportive but also heavier. Its a good gepromise between the gefort of a soft mattress and the supportiveness of a firm one.
What is Memory Foam made of?
Memory foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. Its important to remember that when new, memory foam gives off a chemical odor which some people find unpleasant. This fades with airing but some people remain sensitive to it.
ILD
Toppers are given an ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) rating. These ratings range from 10 to 100. The higher the rating, the firmer the topper.
Density
The density is perhaps the most important aspect of memory foam. The more density the mattress has, the better the quality. The density is also an indicator of gefort. Higher density memory foam reacts to body heat which allows it to mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. Its heat-retaining properties are also helpful to some pain sufferers, who find the added warmth helps alleviate pain.
The density measures the weight per cubic foot. For example, a 3lb topper weighs 3lbs per cubic foot. (Caution: Some suppliers advertisethe weight per 2 cubic ft). So make sure you ask so you are nont misled. Toppers generally range in density from 2lb to 5lb, so a 3lb topper would be ideal not too hard or too soft.
Why a Topper?
Mattress toppers lie on top of an existing mattress. They provide a layer of gefort and warmth between the user and the mattress. They beneficial when the existing mattress is worn or ungefortable. They would be great in a dorm room at university so that you dont have to sleep on a mattress that countless other students have slept on! As I stated earlier, a mattress topper much more cost effective when you have a relatively new mattress.
